YCon 2005

I still have YCon 2005 images of my own to post some day but right now I'm clearing out my inbox. [info]hidden_hero came with me when I met my number one mangaka, Higuri Yuu. And it was going really well until I realized I was talking to THE mangaka whose works moved me the most (although yes, it's likely tied with Dr. Ten... and I confess now I'd have to say that Dr. Ten has likely nudged just ahead of Higuri Yuu by a bit... sue me!)...

And I broke down in tears of rapturous joy. How pathetic am I?

Ahhh but it was great. She signed my copy of Ludwig II, tissues were called for, and on the last day I was snagged to help out with the raffle at her art demo. Here's the irony, I was standing up to leave because I had a plane to catch and that lovely fellow from DPM (whose name currently escapes me) zoomed over and solicited my services to collect money and hand out raffle tickets. What am I going to say? No. So I helped out and left just before the raffle (but I did my job ;-).

So here's the picture Pira took which she called...

The moment when the composure crumbled....

Oh yes, and I gave her a bag of edible goodies from Vancouver (lots of salmon, maple goodies, chocolates, etc.) -- no way I'm giving a mangaka something that takes up valuable space. And they like to eat! Her eyes went so huge at the goodies and she was very grateful.

Oh, and finally, she is the best dressed, kindest and most elegant woman. Pure class.

Dr. Ten Translation Project

Posted on 2006.01.14 at 18:04

UPDATED NEWS - MARCH 2, 2006: Please be advised that a proper web page has been created for the Dr. Ten Project. To see current translations, scanlations, offer donations etc., please visit the Dr. Ten Project. Thank you kindly for your continued support.

BACKGROUND:

Dr. Ten recently released Side Story of Tokyo Savage: A Passage From Servant Boy Volume 5. The plot has grown quite thick and volume 5 presents with some new characters and some very intense situations. I think many fans agree that the Passage series is beyond worthy of a translation. I would also like to interject at this point and mention to those who are unaware that there is a prequel to Passage called The Map of Tokyo Savage, where many of the characters from Map transition into Passage.

I would ordinarily put my efforts towards petitioning one of the North American publishers to licence the Passage series, but anyone who is familiar with the books should be able to understand that its numerous taboo subject matters make its licensing highly improbable. In other words, Passage will likely never be licensed in North America.

There are 2 volumes (complete) of Map and currently 5 volumes of Passage. Passage volume 1 has been scanlated by [info]insaneneko and myself. What remains to be translated and scanlated are: 2 volumes of Map and 4 volumes of Passage. 6 volumes in total.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We have been blessed with a unique opportunity to receive a translation of Dr. Ten's Passage and Map (all 6 volumes) in fairly short order (a couple months at most for all volumes). The translation of the 6 manga volumes would be performed not only by a professional manga (including yaoi) translator, but a major yaoi fan as well and someone who is very enthusiastic regarding this series. For reasons that I hope you'll understand, I cannot disclose this person's identity but suffice to say that this translator's résumé reads exceptionally well and she has intimate knowledge of manga, yaoi and the industry, all of which would essentially provide a very worthy translation of this series.

The end result will produce a text translation of the aforementioned volumes, free for distribution, to anyone who wishes. The translation itself will not be for sale. From the translation a scanlation will also result in due course. I will post the translations here as they come available, as well as on my own website. Anyone else is free to distribute or host the translations as well.

As a quick aside, sound effects and "bedroom noises" will also be translated. :-)

DONATIONS:

The translation itself, however, does need to be paid for and the total amount to be paid is a fraction of what the translator would normally receive for the work involved. Payment is to be made in two parts. I have already put forth half of the required monies and furnished the translator with the 2 volumes of Map and 5 volumes of Passage (these are hers to keep). The other half of the funds I hope to raise from fans who, like me, feel that such a translation is a worthy endeavour and that now is a good time for a translation (and ultimately scanlation) of Map and Passage. Summaries, quick translations of various pages are all useful, and I'm very grateful for the offers of fans to translate the books over time, but we have an incredible opportunity here to receive professional quality manga translations from someone who is a fellow fan and well versed in the industry.

Any amount of donation would be appreciated, and I thank you most sincerely for any offers of financial assistance.

After speaking with a fellow fan, she has kindly offered a donation already. So what is remaining? Please scroll down for the current approximate amount required. Any donations received in excess of the amount required I would like to use to ask the translator to also translate volume 6 of Passage (likely the final volume) when it is released at the end of 2006 (anticipated release time). I will update this post on an ongoing basis (see below) regarding the amount still required.

UPDATED NEWS - MARCH 2, 2006: Please be advised that a proper web page has been created for the Dr. Ten Project. To see current translations, scanlations, offer donations etc., please visit the Dr. Ten Project. Thank you kindly for your continued support.

Please use the donation button below for PayPal payments. If you would like to send a cheque or money order, please contact me (xandria[at]yaoi.ca).

Further, if you have any specific questions about the project etc., please send me an e-mail. I am very sincere, and it is my fondest hope that sufficient donations will provide for a spectacular translation of Passage and Map (again, this will be for 6 volumes). Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

PS: I am leaving this post open to the public in case anyone wishes to spread the news of this project to others who may be interested in supporting a translation of Dr. Ten's Map and Passage series'.
